Implementing the Rights to Water and Sanitation

The rights to water and sanitation enjoy increasing recognition under international law, however, the international mechanisms for implementing these rights remain largely unexplored. This session will address this question from the perspective of environmental and health law, with particular emphasis on the UN-ECE Protocol on Water and Health and its compliance committee.

	Gian Luca Burci is Adjunct Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute. He has served in the Legal Office of the World Health Organization since 1998 and was appointed WHO Legal Counsel in 2005. Professor Burci previously served as Legal Officer at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna and in the United Nations Secretariat in New York. Jorge Vinuales is Adjunct Professor of International Law, Harold Samuel Professor of Law and Environmental Policy at the University of Cambridge and chair of the Compliance Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Protocol on Water and Health.
